Permaculture is the development of agricultural ecosystems that are intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. Currently we have one permaculture initiative in Makongeni School where we provide training on the philosophies and techniques of permaculture and these are then applied to small farms and organic gardens. Food security and poverty are the principle cause of hunger and worryingly, rural poverty is on the rise. Simply put, people cannot afford to purchase enough food. Around 800 million people in developing countries currently do not have enough food to eat and because under-nutrition magnifies the effects of every disease, this is a major cause of mortality among rural populations. The trainings and garden models are meant to be models for children and communities to learn and practice the same to their home stead by doing this we would have increased the communities level of food security and I the long run our soils are not damaged.
